Speed and cost

How long does a bank transfer take?

Faster Payments normally arrive within seconds, CHAPS the same working day and Bacs in three working days. See Faster Payments.

What does it cost?

Usually nothing for Faster Payments on personal accounts. CHAPS and international payments often carry fees. See CHAPS and international transfers.

Safety checks

What does "no match" mean?

The name you entered does not match the account. Stop and verify. See Confirmation of Payee.

Is it safe to pay by bank transfer?

It is safe when you know and trust the person. It is riskier with strangers, because transfers are hard to reverse.

Fraud and refunds

Will I get my money back if I am scammed?

Possibly, if the payment was on Faster Payments or CHAPS between UK accounts and the claim meets the conditions, up to £85,000 per claim. See APP fraud reimbursement.

Who do I tell first?

Your bank, straight away, using a number you trust.

Mistakes

I typed the wrong account number

Call your bank immediately. See wrong account steps.

International

Why did my recipient get less?

Fees from intermediary banks and the exchange rate margin can reduce the amount.

Scams

How do I report a scam?

Tell your bank, report to the police, and forward scam texts to 7726. See scams to watch for.

Final checklist

Before any bigger payment: confirm the details by a second route, check the name, read any warning in full, and take a moment. If something feels wrong, wait. Genuine payments can wait a few hours. Our home page lists every guide.

Useful numbers and services

These are for general guidance. Always check your bank's own contact details on its official website or card.

More reading

See scams, Bacs and Faster Payments for deeper explanations.

Questions about limits

Why is my bank stopping a large payment?

Banks set limits and use fraud checks. Call them to raise a limit or confirm the payment is genuine. Always use the number on your card.

Questions about businesses

How should a business protect itself?

Verify any change of supplier bank details by phone using a number you already hold, use dual approval for payments, and train staff on invoice fraud. See scams.

Are businesses covered by the refund rules?

Microenterprises and charities that meet the PSR definitions are, for qualifying payments. Check the PSR rules for larger organisations. See APP fraud reimbursement.

This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Rules, limits and fees differ between banks and change over time, so check with your bank and the official sources listed.
